Speaker: Elise Rivers, M.Ac., Dipl.Ac., presenting on
“How to Build a Unique & Sustainable Community Acupuncture Practice”

1 PDA – Meeting to follow presentation.

This one hour presentation is an introduction to the basic elements of a community acupuncture practice uniquely crafted by its owner, Elise Rivers. Many community acupuncture practices are modeled after Working Class Acupuncture, the first business to offer this style of practice in Portland, OR. Elise built upon their basic model by modifying it to suit her vision for a health care business, as well as adapt it to the needs of the population she serves. The modifications and policies of practice she developed have led to steady growth as well as a sustainable, enjoyable environment for both her staff and patients. In this presentation you will learn what Elise feels are the critical elements to building a successful community acupuncture practice. While every community practice has its own style that reflects the owner, they all share one thing in common: to provide acupuncture to those who cannot afford the current market rate of a private practice in an on-going way. Elise built upon this basic to create a total healing experience that keeps patients coming back for more!

About Elise Rivers:

Elise Rivers, Esq., M.Ac., Dipl.Ac. is the owner of Community Acupuncture of Mt. Airy (CAMA), a sliding scale acupuncture center located in northwest Philadelphia. Now 7 years old, CAMA has a staff of 7 acupuncturists and other healing arts practitioners, administering thousands of acupuncture treatments every year. Begun as a walk-in clinic at a doctor’s office in 2005, CAMA has had steady growth, and two years ago expanded to its current store-front home on the main street in the neighborhood of Mt. Airy.

Elise is a graduate of the New England Center for Oriental Bodywork (shiatsu), the New England School of Acupuncture, with a Masters in both TCM and Japanese styles of treatment, and is a certified National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) specialist. Her commitment to affordable community health care began in acupuncture school where she completed internships at both the Dimock Community Health Center and the Wellness Center in Boston, MA. This was followed by a year long internship after graduation with a community style walk-in clinic in Northampton, MA. She has both visited and trained with the founders of Working Class Acupuncture in Oregon, the nation’s first community acupuncture practice. A former lawyer, she uses her legal background to grow and manage both the community acupuncture practice as well as her private practice, Moon River Acupuncture. Elise has taught Point Location & Energetics at the Won Institute in Glenside since they began their acupuncture studies program 6 years ago.

Elise lives with her husband Max and her large cat, Lily, in Mt. Airy. Both Elise and Max are committed to healing work outside the field of acupuncture. Max is the world’s first “Marriage Mediator,” helping couples learn novel communication skills to resolve the conflicts in their marriage. Elise is on the board of the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District, and devotes much time to developing programs that improve the safety and beauty of the business corridor in the neighborhood in which she lives and works.

April 15, 2012, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Practitioners of Chinese medicine often characterize their healing arts as “ancient,” imagining an unbroken tradition stretching back over thousands of years. Historians of Chinese medicine, on the other hand, have emphasized the ever-changing nature of Chinese medicine and have shown that modern practices have little to do with ancient precedents. This presentation will introduce the audience to the latest historical research on the history of acupuncture from its standardization by the government in the 11-12th centuries, to its modernization in the 19th and 20th century. At the heart of the presentation are the questions of why history matters to practitioners, and whether facts and myths can be reconciled.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn to separate facts from myths in the history of Chinese medicine.

Participants will learn different interpretations of the foundations of Chinese medicine.

Participants will learn the history of acupuncture from its origins to the present.

About Pierce Salguero:

Pierce Salguero is Assistant Professor of Asian History at Penn State University’s Abington College. Dr. Salguero has a Ph.D. in the History of Medicine from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and has published numerous books and articles on Asian medical history.
The material presented in this seminar offers a personal journey of self discovery informed by The Five Spirits. An overview of the history and shamanic origins of this ideology as well as the Chinese creation story opens the seminar. A look into the Chinese characters of the Spirits gives us a deeper perspective as to their meaning. The seminar presents each one of the Five Spirits as a guide to observing human psychophysical occurrences that can bind psychic energy and stagnate physical energy. Learning how to keep these energies flowing allows us to transform our lives as we dream them to be. The information being offered directs you through the Taoist alchemical tradition as its correspondences to human psychology and physiology. Lifestyle, diet, herbs, spiritual practices, essential oils and flower essences are recommended for balancing mind, spirit and body. The Five Spirits system offers us a roadmap to transformational healing.

DECEMBER APA MEETING:

DAVID MOLONY, L.AC., D.OM.
Presenting on:

“HOMOTOXOLOGIC DETOXIFICATION IN AN ORIENTAL MEDICINE CONSTRUCT”

The December meeting of the APA will be on December 18th, from 3-5 p.m. at the Won Institute for Graduate Studies, 137 S. Easton Road, Glenside, PA. The presentation by David Molony, “Homotoxologic Detoxification in an Oriental Medicine Construct,” will begin at 3 p.m. followed at 4 p.m. by a general business meeting. The presentation and meeting are free and open to all acupuncturists and other interested parties. All acupuncturists will receive 1 PDA for attending the presentation. Attendees should bring their acupuncture license number and their NCCAOM certificate number with them for the purpose of documenting for NCCAOM PDA requirements.

Description of the Presentation:

This is an introduction to basic homotoxicology and homeopathy, and the use of the HEEL detox kit to enhance outcomes of Oriental Medicine treatments. The concept of Homotoxicology was developed by Hans Reckweg, the founder of HEEL Incorporated, and shows the degeneration patterns of human illness. The chart of homotoxicology parallels closely the six phases construct of Oriental Medicine, and is compared to it in the lecture. It is thought that Reckweg utilized the six phases to develop homotoxicology and expanded on it through its use and development.

This one hour lecture will provide some historical review of the six phases, followed by its incorporation into the understanding of the development and use of the homotoxicolgy construct. After the lecture, attendees should be able to understand basic use of the homotoxicology chart via its similarities to the six phases, which is included in Oriental Medicine training.

David Molony Lic Ac, Dipl Ac & C.H., DOM, PhD (OM), is currently Vice President of the Association for Professional Acupuncturist’s in Pennsylvania, past Vice President of the American Association of Oriental Medicine, and Vice Chair from the inception of The World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, which is connected with the World Health Organization.
